Description
The diary of Karel Stuchl from the First World War provides a perspective from the ground up, so to speak. A few months after the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, twenty-two-year-old village teacher Karel Stuchl was called up to the Austrian army and sent to the battlefield. He returned only after six and a half years. He traveled by train south to Austria, and after wartime encounters, endless marches, or train transports through present-day Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, European and Asian Russia, China, and back to Russia, and then by ship across the Pacific Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea with stops at major Asian ports, he arrived back in his homeland via Trieste.
