The islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura enjoy a permanently warm climate with approximately 300 days of sunshine a year. They are part of the Canary Islands, located about 1,100 km southwest of Spain and 115 km from the western coast of Africa. The entire volcanic archipelago is desolate, but Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are even drier and more barren than the other islands, so the landscape, colored in shades of brown and khaki, is filled with sand dunes. The beaches near the main resorts, especially the most famous ones in Puerto del Carmen, are covered with golden sand, as are the beautiful stretches near Playa Blanca, while smaller rocky coves retain their black volcanic sand. The island's economy used to rely on agriculture, but today tourism is the main source of income. Strong winds and good waves attract surfing enthusiasts, and the mild climate makes the islands a year-round holiday destination. Many older visitors from Northern Europe prefer the cooler months as an alternative to the harsh winter in their homeland, while during school holidays, the majority of tourists are families with children.
