The figure of Fernão de Magalhães remains an enigma. He is one of the greatest explorers of all time and literally revolutionized navigation. However, we do not know much about his life. According to most biographers, he never thought of a voyage around the world; he only set out to find a new route to the spice islands, which represented a source of wealth. With this argument, he supposedly convinced the Spanish king to assign him a fleet. However, the author does not believe these claims. Even then, the authorities were more interested in the promise of finances than in a noble goal. To achieve his aim, Magalhães had to give up everything: ideals, his youthful love, and his homeland. The Portuguese did not appreciate his abilities, so he offered his services to the Spaniards. He became an outcast and fought alone against everyone for many years before he managed to acquire a fleet of rickety ships, commanded by captains who were disloyal to him. He had to face unknown seas, storms in the so-called roaring fifties, mutinies, and betrayal... Magalhães was driven forward by passion, and the desire to fulfill an almost impossible dream helped him overcome many traps and dangers.
