It was by no means the first genocide in history, but it was the first genocide of such enormous scale. The goal was not to acquire territory or economic enrichment. Jews were to be exterminated solely for their existence. The seed of this crime against humanity had been carried by Europe for centuries, and antisemitism, elevated to a worldview, became a necessary, though not sufficient, environment supporting its further development.
