Description
The dictionary is the result of the work of the lexicographic team from the Department of Asian Studies at Palacký University Olomouc, which operated under the guidance of successive heads of the department: David Uher, Ivona Barešová, Jiří Lach, and František Kratochvíl. The dictionary is based on theoretical and practical foundations formulated by lexicographer and orientalist Ladislav Zgusta, and its creation was inspired by stimulating discussions with sinologist and lexicologist Zdenka Heřmanová, who was one of the prominent representatives of the authorial team of the Great Czech-Chinese Dictionary published between 1974 and 1984. We also drew inspiration from the practical bilingual dictionaries of Jaromír Vochala. Last but not least, we were inspired by the personal and professional contributions of our teacher and lexicographer Oldřich Švarný, who taught us that Chinese is a lifelong love. The dictionary is designed as a decoding, i.e., a translation tool for the moderately advanced Czech user, but due to the priority of pronunciation in sorting and searching, it is also usable for beginners.
