Venice, which seemingly rises from the waters, actually lies on many islands, and the Canal Grande forms the main artery of its historic center. The canal is also the best place to observe the palaces shimmering in the lagoon waters. You can admire the Canal Grande not only from the four bridges that arch over it but also from the deck of a vaporetto or a ferry called traghetto, which provides transport across the canal. Orientation will be aided by maps of individual districts, with recommended places marked on the district maps by colored dots with numbers. The red coordinates (e.g., C2) refer to the fold-out map of Venice (inserted at the back of the guide).
