Portuguese is one of the Romance languages and is the sixth most widely spoken language in the world. It is spoken by a quarter of a billion people, more than 200 million of whom are in Brazil, the only Portuguese-speaking country in South America. This is all thanks to the overseas voyages of the Portuguese in the 15th and 16th centuries and the subsequent colonization of new territories. A common stumbling block when studying Portuguese is pronunciation, although the Brazilian variant is simpler compared to the European one. The most significant difference is the pronunciation of the consonant clusters 'de', 'te', and 'di', 'ti' as [dʒi], [tʃi] (dia – [dʒía], tia – [tʃía]). Only in southern Brazil (the states of Santa Catarina and Paraná) are these clusters pronounced hard, similar to European Portuguese. In most of Brazil, the consonants 's' and 'z' are pronounced as [s] and [z], except in Rio de Janeiro, where the pronunciation is European. Overall, Brazilian Portuguese is more comprehensible and melodic. Regarding morphology, the main difference lies in the expression of the progressive tense: in Brazilian Portuguese, it is expressed using the gerund, while in European Portuguese, it is expressed using the infinitive. Another significant difference is in the position of unstressed pronouns: in Brazilian Portuguese, they are placed before the verb, while in European Portuguese, they are placed after the verb.
