All's well that ends well. Hope dies last. Fortune favors the brave. London 1876 Hetty Feather is still quite a small baby when her desperate mother leaves her at the foundling hospital. There are many such children in the foundling hospital – but before Hetty can start school, she must live with a foster family. Hetty is poor but happy. She lives in the countryside with her 'brothers' Jem and Gideon. She helps in the fields and comes up with all sorts of games. One day, the children secretly attend a circus performance, and Hetty is captivated by the act of the equestrienne Madame Adeline and her horses. However, Hetty's happiness is threatened by her return to the foundling hospital, where a very strict regime now prevails. On the day of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, Hetty gets another chance to see Madame Adeline – and perhaps even find her real mother...
