Description
San Francisco in 1940: the city is alive with celebrations of Spring Festivals, the Chinese New Year, and a three-day Rice Bowl Festival aimed at raising funds for war relief for China, which has been attacked by Japan. The quirky private investigator Miranda Corbie refuses to come to terms with the murder of a young Japanese man, Takahashi, who was shot right before her eyes in Chinatown. Due to the Japanese invasion of China, relations between the Chinese and Japanese communities are tense, and the police are reluctant to get involved in the feuding dragon gangs, but Miranda Corbie wants justice. In her investigation, she encounters many pitfalls, not only because of her past as a high-class courtesan, which on the other hand gives her insight into the world of lanterns that the authorities pretend not to see. This detective novel, belonging to the hard-boiled school, has received great acclaim from readers and critics alike, who praise the author Kelli Stanley as the new Chandler or Hammett.
