An expedition in the Amazon jungle is searching for the mysterious Kothog tribe. They find a hut with cult objects of the tribe, among which is a perfectly crafted figurine of a strange being. The expedition leader, Whittlesey, steals this figurine from the hut, wraps it up, and sends it to the Museum of Natural History in New York. However, the entire expedition ends tragically; some members get lost in the jungle, while others perish in a plane crash. Only a few crates of findings remain from the expedition, which end up in the museum and are placed in storage. Five years later, the museum is preparing a grand exhibition on natural religion. Its goal is to attract as many visitors as possible, so most of the exhibits are placed in the display at the last minute. Just before the exhibition opens, a series of mysterious murders occur in the museum. The victims are mutilated, missing their brain stem. A group of scientists led by Dr. Frock, along with his assistants Margo Green and Greg Kawakita, as well as police officers led by Lieutenant D'Agosta and FBI agent Pendergast, try to unravel the mystery.
