Description
One of the main slogans of November 1989 was "Return to Europe." However, our understanding of Europe at that time was very vague. We envisioned freedom, openness, and prosperity. Today we know that the European Union also means adherence to common rules. The Union is based on the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and the observance of human rights, including the rights of minorities. It is these common values that form the foundation of the Union, not subsidy programs or often exaggerated and even annoying regulations of trivialities. We should not forget that.
Twelve contributions in this anthology address the definition of the basic EU value framework, its observance, and the practicality of enforcement in practice. Their authors are experts who deal with both legal and political aspects of the EU and who have worked or are working in the highest European judicial institutions, examining issues of economic integration from the perspective of independent academics or defending the Czech Republic in proceedings before the Court of Justice.
