Starting from the 18th century to the present day, the idea of freedom has largely merged with liberalism in the Western world. In the context of Czech society, this occurred with extraordinary intensity during several pivotal historical moments of the 20th century – in 1918 and in 1989. However, during the same period, other ideological movements and political movements, particularly nationalism and socialism, also appropriated the idea of freedom. Not only in the first months after November '89 but also at the beginning of the 1990s, we looked back at the legacy of the First Republic, drawing inspiration from its constitution, ideas, and in practical terms, from many of its legal regulations. Then followed years of 'daily operations,' focusing on prosperity, success, and minor skirmishes, while there seemed to be no reason for a more profound reflection on our existence. This fact was essentially unchanged even with the gradual recognition of the differences between the form of the liberal world between the two world wars and its form at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries.
