In one of his texts, Savigny formulates a programmatic thesis of legal science: "Every age of people must be imagined as a continuation and development of all past times... No age creates its world arbitrarily, but does so in inseparable community with the entire past. Therefore, every age must recognize something as given." The effort to approach an understanding of the bond between the historical and the theoretical is not only a convincing, justified scientific-methodological approach, but (or perhaps especially?) a passion reminiscent of solving puzzles or assembling jigsaws. From dry scientific or professional writing, one can thus "sail into the waters" of uncovering stories, contexts, reasons, or intentions behind shifts in human knowledge. The stories of legal concepts are stories of our language, our speech, and thus they are also stories of our thinking, our reasoning, our understanding. The book offers a view of two key analytical principles of law, the contexts, intentions, and purposes of their emergence and transformations in the flow of European history. With humility and admiration, we can observe our ancestors' ability to respond to the challenges of their time by shaping the conceptual apparatus of law. It also provides insight into the pitfalls and contradictions of contemporary perceptions of the principles of non-contradiction and completeness of law.
