This publication is the first Czech-written text that comprehensively and from the very basics presents the so-called Bayesian assessment of the weight of evidence – a modern concept that has increasingly found its way into forensic laboratories and courtrooms in recent years. The aim of this revolutionary approach is to replace the currently used intuitive expert interpretation of measured data or obtained information with a fully rational, scientifically correct, repeatable, and verifiable system that allows for the correct determination of the weight of evidence, including the related uncertainty of expert conclusions. The reader will become familiar with the general principles and procedures of Bayesian reasoning and its applications in forensic sciences. The publication includes a commented Czech translation of the directive of the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI), which regulates the area of expert assessment of evidence and which is formulated on Bayesian principles. The third part of the book contains two model examples from the field of forensic DNA analysis and handwriting examination, which demonstrate how the ENFSI directive can be reflected in expert practice.
