Description

At the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, women were not allowed to compete. According to Pierre de Coubertin, the Games were created "as a regular celebration of male athleticism with female applause as a reward." It was not until the London Olympics in 2012 that women were allowed to compete in all disciplines. This more than one hundred-year evolution of women's participation in the Olympics well documents the shift that gender equality in sports has undergone. The gradual elimination of inequalities is a long-term process and results from extensive efforts by international (sports) organizations and the athletes themselves. However, partial inequalities still persist. The publication focuses on one aspect of equality – equality in remuneration. Although the principle of equal pay for men and women is enshrined in international and European law, the reality varies greatly across different sports. The author analyzes the causes of this inequality, offers numerous positive and negative examples from practice, compares the approaches of various organizations, and proposes feasible solutions.
