Description

The university textbook is the work of a collective of authors from the Department of Legal History at Charles University in Prague, whose goal was to provide an overview of the legal development on the European continent in basic outlines. The authors focus primarily on the common features of European legal heritage, whose origins date back to ancient Mesopotamia, emphasizing the key countries in this area – France, Germany, and Russia. Therefore, the history of Anglo-American law is omitted from this work (which is covered in a separate textbook). The exposition in the first part is organized by individual countries of the European continent (in addition to the aforementioned countries, also Italy and Poland), while the second part employs a comparative method across time: it presents the legal history of churches from the 6th to the 20th century as well as the history of political and legal doctrines, categorized by individual historical periods. The publication is primarily intended for law students, providing them with the necessary overview of the legal history of the European continent up to the beginning of the 21st century, but it may also attract a broader lay audience.
