Spandakárika, "The Tantric Song of Divine Pulsation," is considered a work that was directly transmitted by Lord Shiva to the sage Vasugupta on Mount Kailash. Vasugupta's disciple, the sage Kṣemarāja, refers to these fifty-two verses in his commentary as the heart of Mahāmudrā (The Great Cosmic Gesture). In the book Yoga Spandakárika, Daniel Odier presents readers with a translation of the original text along with his own commentary and the commentaries of more than thirty different tantric masters. The earliest masters of Spandakárika regarded the entire universe, including matter, as consciousness, and this understanding led them to develop corresponding yoga practices. The sacred dance of Spandakárika, known as Tāṇḍava, is immensely subtle, and mastering it requires thousands of hours of practice. However, it surpasses all other forms of physical practice and allows the practitioner to connect with the inner divine pulsation. Upon mastering the third level, a yogi or yogini can evoke Shiva's dance in space. This art is depicted in sculptures found in Indian and Tibetan tantric temples. After achieving this mastery, energy is no longer bound by the limiting perception of duality.
