Description

In 1798, Napoleon Bonaparte, then merely a general of the French Republic, set sail on a military expedition to Egypt. This second military campaign of his, aimed at harming British trade and colonial empire, was also an attempt to establish a similar empire to the one Alexander the Great once sought to create. It is a story of the clash of two worlds of thought, of tolerance and irreconcilability, of hopes, disappointments, suffering, dying, and glory, in which we will traverse expeditions into the desert, battles with the Mamluks on the banks of the Nile, fighting the Turks in Palestine, defeat in the naval battle of Aboukir, failure in the siege of Acre, and a dazzling yet fruitless victory in the land battle of Aboukir. The book answers many pressing questions regarding Bonaparte's plans, actions, and his escape back to France, and continues through the fate of the abandoned Oriental army until its capitulation to the British in 1801. It was written using the memories of dozens of eyewitnesses who marched with or against Bonaparte in pursuit of glory and simultaneously revealed to the world a forgotten ancient civilization.
