Description
The 'Torn Strings' is a story of passionate love that could not be fulfilled due to bourgeois morality, class pride, and petty disputes. Mayor Sedláček is a respected and wealthy citizen whose two beautiful daughters have the best prospects for advantageous marriages when they are courted by the successful sons of the local industrialist Čech. However, the older daughter Běta repels her suitor with her uptight behavior, which she believes befits a wealthy bride. The sincere and passionate love of the second couple pays a heavy price for the petty disputes of their fathers and their stubbornness. The book is also interesting for its depiction of the economic and cultural life of a Czech town at the end of the 19th century.
