Description
The conflict between France and England, later referred to by historians as the Hundred Years' War, continued in its second half with victories for the French constable Bertrand du Guesclin and his adventurous campaign into Spain, but then the French king went mad and the country fell into complete chaos. Fortunately, England under Richard II and Henry IV waged the war with France only half-heartedly, but Henry V renewed it with full force and defeated the French decisively at Agincourt in 1415. Only after his death did France slowly begin to recover. The turning point came with Joan of Arc, but the end was marked two decades after her burning at the stake with the battle of Formigny, which signified the definitive victory for the French. The era of great battles and campaigns, political upheavals, power struggles on both sides of the English Channel, intrigues, and murders is brought to life by the author with the help of those who lived through those dark times, chroniclers from France, England, and elsewhere.
