Description
The conflict between France and England, later named the Hundred Years' War by historians, began with a dispute over the Duchy of Aquitaine, which was an English fief in France, and on the other side, the Anglo-French rivalry in Flanders. It culminated when Edward III of England made claims to the French crown. The book brings to life epic battles, the naval battle at Sluys, the knightly clash at Crécy in 1346, where the Czech King John of Luxembourg fell, and the battle of Poitiers in 1356, where the French king was captured. France suffered catastrophic defeats, but it began to glimpse better times for the first time when the Breton warrior Bertrand du Guesclin took command of the French armies... The era of great battles, political upheavals, bloody reckonings, murders, massive peasant uprisings, and terrible plague epidemics is revived by the author with the help of those who lived through these dark times, chroniclers from France, England, and beyond.
