Description
In the building of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, there is a remarkable marble statue of a British naval officer belted with a sword. The man seemingly inexplicably appears to be fighting on land, as a cannonball is embedded in the stone wall at his feet. The name carved on the pedestal, which explains everything, is Sir Sidney Smith, and most people who do not closely study the history of the British Royal Navy or the wars with revolutionary and Napoleonic France have never heard of him.
