Description
Murat Joachim Murat (1767–1815) was a peasant from southern France and a soldier who joined the French Revolution. In Italy, he earned general's epaulettes under Bonaparte and gained a reputation as a brilliant cavalry commander in Egypt. He became Bonaparte's brother-in-law and, upon the establishment of the empire, a marshal and imperial prince. He went from campaign to campaign, from battle to battle, yearning for glory and power. Napoleon granted him the duchy of Berg and made him King of Naples in 1808, whom he regarded merely as his puppet. Murat's conflict between loyalty to Napoleon and the desire for independence culminated with French defeats, and King Gioacchino, that is Joachim, did not know whether to think more of his emperor or of himself. His efforts to maintain the Neapolitan crown led him to switch sides to Napoleon's opponents and ultimately brought him before a firing squad in Calabria's Pizzo.
