Description
The Peloponnesian War refers to two conflicts that took place from 457 to 445 and from 431 to 404 BC. They occurred during the war between the Greeks and the Persians, and the cause, at least according to ancient authors, was the expansionism of Athens, the most powerful Greek city-state. Both sides, the Athenian League and the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta, drew not only all of Greece but also Sicily into a fratricidal struggle. With alternating successes, they measured their strength in dozens of battles on land and at sea, until the Athenians were defeated by both the Lacedaemonians and themselves. The course of the conflict and its outcome, which ended with the domination of Greece by Philip II and Alexander the Great, is distant, yet in many ways resembles the great power rivalry after World War II...
