Description
The stories in the book Poachers from the Shipping Canals are set in the Šumava forests of the 19th and 20th centuries. This book does not present any historical facts; the loosely adapted poaching stories are selected from old hunting magazines. I include some documents and short newspaper reports that briefly describe the clashes between poachers and gamekeepers, sometimes ending tragically. It is by no means a document, but a book that should engage the reader with its plot, drama, and the description of the mysterious, harsh, yet beautiful Šumava, not only from the period of the construction of both shipping canals but also a small glimpse into the hard lives of the local mountain families on the Bavarian and Šumava sides of the border.
