Description
Although André Masséna was one of the most capable and feared revolutionary and Napoleonic commanders, who crossed swords with the legendary Duke of Wellington, it could be said that his persona is somewhat shrouded in a 'misty haze.' Some of his biographers, especially the French ones, resort to exaggerated criticism, or conversely, engage in unequivocal praise. In short, Masséna's actions, his successes, but also his undeniable failures and transgressions are either exaggerated or quietly ignored. Masséna was already considered very controversial during his lifetime, and his contemporaries debated the military and personal qualities of this man, which have yet to be satisfactorily resolved.
