Description
The two parts of the story subtitled 'A Woman's Novel' take us to a small town in the Czech-Moravian Highlands, where the story of the main character Zdena unfolds in the first half of the 20th century. A young, inexperienced woman wants to fulfill her only life mission, which her parents guided her towards, to be a devoted wife and a self-sacrificing mother of a large family. However, she soon loses her ideals, partly due to her husband, experiences several personal disappointments, deals with problems with small, later growing children, struggles with financial shortages, and changes in her views on child-rearing and the existence of marriage. Nevertheless, the aging schoolmistress, surrounded by adult children and a reformed husband, experiences a sense of satisfaction and happiness, for as the author wrote, 'motherhood is strength and the most powerful love. It is the sweetness and bitterness of a woman's life.'
