Description
Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington, has undoubtedly been one of the unshakeable pillars of the British pantheon since 1815. A brief glance at any of his portraits reveals a steel gaze and a firm, narrow jaw, which seem to embody the very essence of Britishness. He appears to have lacked no virtue, never lost a decisive battle, waged war with soldiers, not civilians, was renowned for his bulldog tenacity, and remained cool-headed in the face of the greatest crises, culminating his remarkable military career with the legendary defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo.
