Eight decades have passed since the events described on the pages of this book. Such a long time separates us from the aerial battles of 1937 taking place in the Spanish sky. A bloody civil war between Spanish leftist republicans and conservative rebels had been raging on the Iberian Peninsula for two years by then. It ignited in July 1936. Originally an internal conflict, the internal disputes of a shattered Spain drew in more and more foreign players: an army of leftist volunteers and idealists of various shades, as well as "volunteers" from totalitarian powers, from Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Bolshevik Soviet Union. The publication brings closer the aerial battles on the main battlefield of the Spanish Civil War. That is, above the front lines that stretched from the Mediterranean coast in the south further inland, through the landscapes of Andalusia and Extremadura, right on the outskirts of Madrid, across the Guadarrama mountains, cutting through Aragon, and ending in the north at the border with France. The description of events is defined by the months of April and November 1937.
