Description
Cavalry officer Karl Johann von Grueber spent fourteen years fighting against Napoleonic France and, as an Austrian cuirassier, participated in the battles of Hohenlinden, Ulm, Stockach, Aspern, and Wagram. He fought alongside the French in Russia in 1812 and, in another war against them, reached Paris in 1814 as a Bavarian cavalryman. He left behind almost adventurous memories of life in the armies of Napoleon's opponents, of battles and duels over matters of honor, of which he experienced quite a few. The critical edition of his memoirs is supplemented with numerous comments that shed light on the era, types of weapons, and the armies in which Grueber served.
