Description
The tumultuous and transformative period of the revolutionary and Napoleonic wars brought to prominence a number of individuals, among whom we can find almost indisputable heroes without the proverbial flaw in their beauty, as well as men who are undoubtedly at least controversial, yet no less successful and remarkable. The main representative of this second group can be identified as Jean-Baptiste-Jules Bernadotte, who rose from the ranks of the royal and later revolutionary army to the position of general, envoy, minister of war, Napoleon's marshal, Duke of Ponte-Corvo, Crown Prince Charles John of Sweden, King Charles John III of Norway, and finally King Charles XIV of Sweden. Among other honors, Bernadotte became the nine hundred and ninth knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Spain, the twenty-eighth bearer of the Swedish Grand Cross of the Order of the Sword, and received the Prussian Orders of the Black Eagle and the Iron Cross, the Austrian Order of Maria Theresa, the Russian Order of Saint George, and the French Grand Eagle of the Legion of Honor.
