This Czech-language book presents Dr Jana Lachmanová’s testimony about exceptional figures in twentieth-century Czech nephrology, at a time when memories fade and eyewitnesses become fewer. Jan Brod, Mirko Chytil, Severin Daum, Otto Schück, Jiří Jirka, Josef Erben, Albert Válek, Karel Opatrný, Pavel Rossmann, Karel Matoušovic and Libuše Hradcová are the names that shaped the field during the difficult periods of the Second World War, communism, the Prague Spring and normalization. Having had the rare opportunity to know or work with these figures, the author describes not only their professional contributions to medicine but also the human lives marked by their times. These are the stories of doctors who faced emigration, career setbacks and political purges, yet never forgot their vocation. The book pays tribute to people who often received no thanks and recalls what should not be forgotten. It also covers the introduction of artificial-kidney dialysis, tracing its history over eighty years worldwide and seventy years in the Czech lands, and includes an introduction and references.
