Bruxismus – Šedý Jiří (2024)

In medicine, there are very few topics burdened by a greater degree of misunderstanding, misinterpretations, myths, irrationality, and unfortunately also incorrect diagnoses and treatments than bruxism. The Czech translation of the technical term as 'grinding teeth' evokes that it should be addressed by a dentist. However, it seems to be forgotten that it is the muscles that move those teeth, and the jaws, which dentists often have little to do with and often do not want to deal with at all. Medical professions that should primarily address this topic due to their specialization, particularly rehabilitation medicine, mostly remain silent about bruxism or refer to psychiatry. As a result, bruxism finds itself in a 'no man's land' and is treated more for the consequences on the teeth and the psyche rather than the actual causes of the disease, which are often embedded deep within the patient's musculoskeletal system. ***** Based on his many years of experience caring for patients with this condition, information from practical courses, and foreign professional literature, the author has written a representative and unique monograph on bruxism, which has been lacking in our professional literature.
