Description
Facial nerve paresis in both acute and chronic phases leads to a whole range of functional and organic impairments. These include speech disorders, difficulties in the oral phase of swallowing, vision problems, and issues with nonverbal communication. Facial nerve paresis functionally, aesthetically, and emotionally limits the affected person. Patients are often socially stigmatized, leading to a significantly reduced quality of life. The start of therapy is determined by the type and severity of the condition. It is an interdisciplinary treatment focused primarily on facial symmetry and the ability to control isolated movements specifically. Coordination exercises must support muscle functions to prevent synkinesis. Targeted exercises led by a therapist using biofeedback improve the function of facial muscles and reduce the risk of secondary damage. A significant component of rehabilitation is also self-therapy, which can in no way replace therapeutic support but can increase the frequency and availability of necessary treatment.
