Eighty years after the death of J. S. Machar, readers are presented for the first time with a selection from the practically complete works of this prominent prose writer, poet, and politician. In more than seventy published works, one of the most distinctive Czech authors of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries managed to capture both the tragedy and comedy of many dramatic decades: from the dissolution of Austria-Hungary through the establishment of an independent Czechoslovak state to the disillusionment with the developments of the First and Second Republics.
