Biological treatment is a phenomenon of 21st-century medicine. It has changed therapeutic approaches for many diseases in which immune system dysfunction plays a role in their etiopathogenesis, and it has fundamentally contributed to improving the prognosis and quality of life for patients. The eighth volume of the Motol Pediatric Seminars series, titled Biological Treatment in Pediatrics, summarizes expert contributions from the fields of immunology, pediatric dermatology, pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric nephrology, pediatric diabetology, and pediatric oncology. This is all supplemented with updates from the COVID era and selected case studies. The authors describe and explain the relatively general term biological treatment in relation to all three of its definitions: in a narrower sense as immunotherapy, further as treatment including human immunological medicinal products (vaccines, toxins, sera, allergens), and in the broadest sense, it encompasses all medicinal products produced biotechnologically, using recombinant technology - vaccines, growth factors, immune modulators, monoclonal antibodies, protein-based drugs, and products derived from human blood and plasma.
