The evolution of humanity is conditioned by its continuous reproduction. The entire history of mankind has been accompanied by random or intentional interventions that suppress population growth. The oldest written record providing contraceptive recommendations is an ancient Egyptian papyrus from Kahun dedicated to women's health issues (around 1900 BC). As societal demand changed, so did the knowledge of contraceptive methods. The author extensively maps how the patterns of human reproductive behavior have radically changed over the centuries, what contraceptive methods were used in history and with what success, and the prospects for contraception in the 21st century are also discussed. Contraceptive methods have ceased to be taboo for both the lay and professional public. Today, the issue of contraception forms one of the main components of gynecological outpatient practice, and basic information is gradually reaching the awareness of specialists in other fields. Contraception is becoming a scientific discipline, and navigating the vast array of methods can pose challenges even for specialists.
