The monograph summarizes the current state of knowledge on decompressive craniectomy, a neurosurgical procedure that has experienced a renaissance in recent years, yet is still accompanied by a number of controversies. Decompressive craniectomy is performed on patients with refractory intracranial hypertension, which is often caused by brain edema in various pathological conditions. The publication is divided into nine main chapters. The most extensive chapter summarizes current knowledge on the indications for decompressive craniectomy in various pathological conditions. The technical execution of the operation is described in detail, and both currently used and abandoned types of decompressive craniectomies are presented. A special chapter is dedicated to neuromonitoring, which currently plays an indispensable role in the indication for decompression. The text is accompanied by numerous illustrations, clear tables, and diverse visual documentation. Some legends for the visual attachments are processed in the form of brief case studies. The book provides a comprehensive source of information not only for neurosurgeons but also for neurologists, intensive care physicians, and radiologists.
