Description
Fifteen years have passed since the last edition of the monograph on Parkinson's disease and parkinsonian syndromes. Significant progress in understanding the biology of neurodegenerative diseases has caused a fundamental shift in the understanding of the taxonomy and nosology of diseases manifesting as parkinsonian syndromes. Knowledge of the pathological correlate of the respective disease has completely changed the way disorders, referred to as atypical parkinsonian syndromes, are classified. Diseases in this category are described and commented on in the new monograph not only in terms of current clinical diagnostic criteria but also in light of the latest taxonomic trends based on ultrastructural histopathological studies.
