Description
The monograph of a literary and cultural historian focuses for the very first time on the examination of so-called popular fantasy in the Czech context, particularly in the area of genre fantasy literature, whose recipients, known as fans, form a distinct subculture (fandom). The book stands at the intersection of literary science, cultural anthropology, sociology, and media studies and is based on the hypothesis of an active and creative approach of recipients to texts. The blurring of boundaries between elite and popular culture, typical of the postmodern era and society, shows the Czechoslovak fandom at the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries as a distinctly postmodern phenomenon, which has so far received minimal attention in domestic social science research.
