Description
Following the selection of lyrical works by Jaroslav Vrchlický (1853–1912) presented in the volume Intimate Lyricism (2000), the Czech Library also brings a collection of the writer's most significant epic works. The youthful and provocative Epic Poems (1876), of which the concluding Satanela was received as an imaginative critique of the rampant romanticism of the time, and the collection Myths I (1879), which remains impressive for its unpathetic, restrained, and humanizing portrayal of Czech national legends, is complemented by the cycle of historical images Fragments of an Epic (1886). The edition was prepared and commented on by Václav Vaněk.
