What kind of reading culture do we have: strong or weak, stable or declining? Are concerns about the decline of reading justified, or are they merely convenient cultural catastrophism? This Czech-language book examines these and other questions using the results of the third statistical survey of readers and reading in the Czech Republic, organised in 2013 by the National Library together with the Institute of Czech Literature of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The survey focuses mainly on the book market: how many books we buy, how much we spend on them, how we choose them, why we do not buy them and which institutions we know. The book also discusses reading, digital reading, public libraries, our favourite books and many other topics. Reading tells us a great deal about ourselves.
