Description
This Czech-language collection of short, interconnected humorous stories is set in a gardeners’ colony in Haná. Just beyond the town, a dozen garden cottages, tool sheds, flower-divided beds, shady compost corners and carefully mown lawns surround a rusty pump and two rusty gates. One leads towards the town square, while the other opens onto fertile fields and, eventually, archaeological excavations, wetlands and the meandering river that gives the region its name. Told in a disorderly sequence like the cards in a pub game of mariáš, the stories bring to life characters and tales from Haná’s rich melting pot. Although none of the stories is endless, many of them endure, because people remain the same even when their faces change, dreaming the same dreams and following the same paths towards unchanging goals. Gardeners are presented as a distinctive community, encompassing small growers and animal keepers as well as anglers, mushroom pickers, dog owners, cottage dwellers, permanent settlers and occasional visitors. A garden colony is a world unto itself.
