Jak uvařit demokracii - Od vládní agonie k polokomunistické vládě – Fiala Petr (2018)

This book by Petr Fiala comments on current developments in Czech politics, from the gradual disintegration of Sobotka’s government to the vote of confidence in Andrej Babiš’s government, which relies on the Communists. As a politician and political scientist, Fiala convincingly exposes the deliberate weakening of democracy and the propaganda designed to lull the public into accepting President Zeman’s and Prime Minister Babiš’s new power games, violations of constitutional rules, growing state bureaucracy, diminishing freedom and a change in the country’s foreign-policy orientation. He points to the present government’s programmatic and value-based emptiness and its managerial failures, and rejects the left’s excuses for relying on the Communist Party. The book is not merely negative or critical, however: it offers a political alternative based on responsible politics, values and a specific programme, with measurable goals for citizens. Against unattainable dreams, constant changes of subject and consuming the future, it presents a path that can lead the Czech Republic among the world’s most successful countries.
