Description
The volume contains essays, studies, selected speeches, and other texts by Jiří Gruša on literature and culture that were created after 1989, both published in Czechoslovakia and abroad, as well as those preserved in the author's estate. In addition to the comprehensive collection Czech Republic – A User's Guide, other writings by the author from 1990 to 2011 are included here. Among them, the Dresden lectures on poetics stand out, as well as articles and reflections dealing with Gruša's older themes, such as the relationship between the author and power, the transnational culture of the Czech lands and Central Europe, and the local experience with totalitarianism. Publications from the last years of the author's life contain numerous memories and portraits. Occasional texts include, for example, Jiří Gruša's speeches as president of the International PEN Club from 2003 to 2009.
