Hugo Boettinger was a sought-after portraitist of the upper classes, a creator of delicate female nudes, and also the author of humorous drawings and caricatures known to a wide audience as Dr. Desiderius. Boettinger's primarily portrait drawings were exceptionally popular and were exhibited and published many times during his lifetime. In the 1920s, readers of Lidové noviny, Prager Presse, Světozor, and several other periodicals frequently encountered the humorous drawings of Hugo Boettinger signed with the pseudonym Dr. Desiderius. The drawings were also published in several albums. His exhibitions in Prague and smaller towns regularly attracted great interest from the public and the press, and his cheerful works sold very quickly at the exhibitions. In 1923, on the occasion of Boettinger's exhibition at the Topič Salon in Prague, which literally drew crowds, critic Václav Nebeský noted that 'there is perhaps no other Czech painter at this moment who enjoys greater popularity among the broadest circles than the caricaturist Hugo Boettinger.' None of the art theorists who studied Hugo Boettinger could help but marvel at how a quick-witted draftsman, who astutely comments on and ironizes all the events around him, could be hidden in one person...
