1917–1918 T. G. Masaryk is assassinated at the Metropol Hotel. Will Austria-Hungary even disintegrate? 1938 The Czechoslovak government refuses to cede the border regions, on September 24 the German army attacks. 1945–1946 The international situation in 1946 does not allow for the completion of the expulsion of Germans, leaving one and a half million in the country. 1947–1948 As early as the summer of 1947, a state of military readiness is declared by President Edvard Beneš, and the communists suffer a crushing defeat in early elections. 1968 Dubček's leadership firmly warns the Soviets against invasion, and they abandon their plans. Will there be even greater democratization or a coup like in Poland in 1981? 1989 On the night of November 21-22, units of the People's Militia converge on Prague. Hundreds of thousands of people fill the streets, yet an order is given for the violent suppression of the demonstrations. Dramatic moments in Czechoslovakia – did they have an alternative?
