Description

The drama takes place in an old estate near a coastal town in western Norway. Former pastor Johanes Rosmer is about to make a significant life decision and break away once and for all from the conservative family tradition in which he was raised. Under the influence of the emancipated Rebekah West, he attempts to change his socio-political views and publicly support liberal forces in the struggle for greater civil liberties. However, the situation becomes complicated by the revelation of the reason behind the suicide of Rosmer's wife, Beata, leading to a tragic outcome. The drama is heavily symbolic, exploring the impossibility of emancipation from deeply rooted ancestral traditions and the clash of modern, liberal views with bigoted Protestantism. Rosmersholm offers a profound insight into human psychology and moral dilemmas. It is published as the 195th volume of the D edition, translated by Fr. Fröhlich.
