Description
A lesser-known exciting tragedy by the significant 17th-century French playwright Racine, Britannicus takes place during the dramatic time surrounding the rise of the infamous tyrant Nero to power. He competes not only for power with his half-brother Britannicus but also for the love of his mistress Junie. Racine understands the story not only as the tragic fate of lovers but primarily as the transformation of the recognized and peaceful young emperor Nero into a monstrous and criminal ruler. The play ends with the words: May this be – for God's sake – his last crime! It is published in a translation by Vladimír Mikeš as the 192nd volume of the D series.
