Description
The famous Greek playwright wrote one of his successful comedies during the years when fierce battles between Athens and Sparta plagued the inhabitants of the Peloponnese. The hero of the play is the Athenian winemaker Trygaios, who sets off to Olympus not on Pegasus, as would be fitting, but on the back of a stinky giant beetle, to plead with Zeus for an end to the war. His satirical gaze targets the military leaders and politicians of both warring states, sparing even the gods, who succumb to 'corruption.' The play was first performed in 421 BC, just days before the Greeks' attempt to end the wars. It is published in a translation and adaptation by Ferdinand Stiebitz, who aims to bring the play closer to his contemporaries. In edition D, volume 188.
